Richa Chadda: Ram-Leela Was A Mistake

Richa Chadda is not your typical Bollywood heroine and she's proud of that. From Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! to Masaan, the actress has often chosen unconventional subjects and yet managed to stand out with her stellar performances. In an exclusive chat with SpotboyE, Richa reveals how she is carving her own niche. Excerpts:

How did Main Aur Charles happen?
I really liked Prawaal Raman's last film, Error 404. When I read in newspapers that Prawaal is making Main Aur Charles, I sent him a message saying that I would really like to work with him and Randeep (Hooda). They called me after 2 weeks. At that point in time, Fukrey had just released, so they wanted to see if I can do that kind of work.

What was your reaction when you read the script?
Prawaal took me through the basic map of events through Charles' life and that hooked me. I have hardly read such a gripping script as Main Aur Charles.
What attracted you to your character?
My character is called Mira and the name has been kept after much deliberation. Just like Mira had soaked herself in worshipping the Lord, my character too has soaked herself in love. For her, love is blind and she doesn't care that she has fallen in love with a criminal. She defends him at the cost of ruining her own life.
Were you apprehensive about your bold scenes with Randeep?
The character of Charles is such that he is very seductive, so we had to bring that across. It's not really about bold scenes. Randeep is a great actor and a thorough professional. You should see how he picked up the diction and changed his body language. It was a real treat working with him.

You won appreciation for your nuanced performance in Masaan. Do you feel bogged down by the critics' or audience's expectation?
I've never been one to follow somebody else's expectation. I'm just happy that a film like Masaan did good business in India and overseas, it won acclaim. So it takes the pressure off.
You have a knack for offbeat roles...
I am in the industry purely because of my offbeat roles. Playing Nawazuddin Siddiqui's mother in Gangs Of Wasseypur was a really risky move; after all, it was my first breakout film. The industry is really changing and accepting all kinds of actors. Different kinds of cinema are making money at the box-office. So it's a good time for actors like us. I know that mistakes can keep you out of the industry, but I don't think non-glamorous roles do. I have made so many mistakes like playing an old woman in Gangs Of Wasseypur, playing a bhabhi in Ram-Leela and playing a gundi in Fukrey. However, it's because of these 'mistakes' that I am here today.

Your future projects?
Right now, I am working on Cabaret. Jiya Aur Jiya with Kalki Koechlin will release next year - it's a slice-of-life film about 2 girls who decide to take a trip. After that, I have Sudhir Mishra's Aur Devdas.
